Donde Esta, where is SOCUE?
Cultivating Promoters of health mind, body and spirit: Promotoras has always been our mission. Sisters of Color United for Education has created economic opportunities, and opportunities for wellness for thousands of individuals, families, generations and across cultures.
As Colorado’s Oldest Promotora program, we have forged a path at the forefront of educating and training community health workers, now recognized as a part of the health care system. Participants have gained essential skills to work within non-profits, or have even taken it to the next level and started their own programs, businesses and community services.
We are blessed, and fundamentally transformation is at the core of our souls, and that is why we are catalysts for change. Keeping our perspectives fresh, we are able to take concepts, such as Promtoras, harm reduction & drug policy, Food as Medicine and holistic health and wellness to the next level. Chances are if you have heard of these concepts, or even are making them happen in your life or workplace- you should thank a Promotora
As an organization we have witnessed 25 years in the struggle for Health Equity, and more importantly have experienced it through the eyes and hearts of Woman and People of Color. Our eyes are wider, our hearts more open and our strategy even more defined, we step into the direction of abundance and have chosen to plant new roots in various geographical locations within the community highlighting the importance of meeting community where they are. Within our three new locations we have abundant space to welcome those in times of need and growth to our services, along with the ability to go out into the neighborhoods and networks meeting face to face with the public.
One might say this evolution of SOCUE takes us back to “working out of our trunk”, and they have hit the nail on the head. This evolution encompasses opportunities for SOCUE programs to become more independent and gain autonomy providing cutting edge wellness opportunities, extending our reach and services to continue, grow and serve an even greater and diverse populations.
SOCUE has moved from it’s 8th and Federal location and we are taking our next exciting and anticipated steps with our new collaborators and spaces including; the Colorado Anti-Violence Project, College View & Denver Inner City Parish, Volunteers of America, the Althea Center for Engaged Spirituality, Addition Research & Treatment Services and the Black Actors Guild. Be ready for a 2015, full of development, youth leadership, Promotora trainings, innovative HIV initiatives, and even new media campaigns.
